There are two kinds of verbs but sometimes we don’t know them. The two kinds of verbs are stative verbs and dynamic verbs. We have no problem with dynamic verbs because we can use them in any kinds of tenses but in stative verbs, it can not normally be used in the continuos ( be – ing ) form. Stative verbs usually refer to a state or condition which is changing or likely to change. They can be divided into verbs of perception which refer to things in the mind and verbs of relation which decribe the relationship between things.
Here are some of stative verbs
- Hate, eg : she hates dancing ( perception )
- Own, eg : i own two houses (relation )
- Contain, eg : the plastic contains three kilograms of rice ( relation )
- Believe, eg : they believe in me ( perception )
Note : those verbs can’t be used in progressive form, we can’t say : she is hating dancing because “ hate “ is not an action.
