Before we come to the steps we need to describe the definition of Relative Pronouns, Relative Pronoun is a pronoun that functions to connect sentences, which explain noun (noun). Nouns here can be human, animal, or things, Relative Pronoun replace the noun in the senetence
Bacause Relative pronouns is different from question word, some people are confused to differenciate them, it is usually placed between two the sentences
But question word is placed in front of the sentence
Kinds of Relative Pronouns
- Who is for “human as subject”
- Whom is for “ human as object”
- Whose is for “ human and thing as possession”
- Which is for “thing as subject and thing”
- That is for “ human and thing as subject and object”
To determine the relative pronoun for human or thing, check the noun before the relative pronoun
Example
Saya akan mengundang seorang artis yg terkenal di Indonesia
I will invite an artis who is famous in Indonesia
We use ’who’ because the word before the relative pronouns is artis as human as subject
Saya akan mengundang seorang artis yang suaranya bagus
I will invite an artist whose voice is nice
‘whose’ is used because the word before the noun is human and has function as possession
Saya akan membeli sebuah mobil yang warnanya biru
I will buy a car whose color is blue
Whose is used because this is possession
Saya akan mengundang seorang artis yang banyak orang kagumi
I will invite an artist whom many people admire
Artis is human and as object in the second sentence
Saya sudah mengenal Sparta yang merupakan seekor anjing buas
I have known Sparta which is as a wild dog
Sparta is the name of a dog and as subject in the second sentence
