Listen and hear is a synonymous English verb. However, the two words differ in their use in English
1. Hear
Hear (heard) is explained by Cambridge with “to receive or become aware of a sound using your ears” which means “accept or become aware of the sound using the ear”. So hear is gaining sound from the outside into our ears. We can translate hear words into Indonesian with “hear or hear”
a. I hear a noise outside.
b. I heard that she had a car accident.
c. She can’t hear very well.
2. Listen
Cambridge explains the meaning of listening with “to give attention to someone or something in order to hear them” which means “paying attention to someone or something with the aim of listening to them”. So listen is listening carefully. We can translate into Indonesian by “listening”
a. Listen! what is the noise?
b. Are you listening to me?
c. She is listening to the radio.
Conclusion
1. Hear is “hear or hear”. We use when there is a sound or news that enters our ears accidentally. “I heard you were sick” “I heard that you were sick”
2. Listen is “listening”. We use when listening to something intentionally and carefully. “I listen to the radio” “I listen to the radio”
