Punctuation marks are usually used in written language. There are some common punctuation marks such as period, comma, apostrophe, colon, semi colon, exclamation point, question mark, quotation mark, and so on. But here, three common punctuation marks will be explained.
- Period
Period is used in the end of a sentence( for example : The cat eats fish. ), but it is usually used also in indirect question ( for example : the police man asked why I stopped in this place. )
- Comma
Comma is used to separate element in a series ( for example : My father has ever visited Japan, Korea, and Germany. ). Besides that it is used to connect two independent clause with some conjuctions such as and, but, or, and so ( for example : he is smart student, but he is sometimes lazy. )
- Apostrophe
We use apostrophe for possessive forms ( for example : that is Tere ‘s bag, this is Aris ‘ hand phone )for the word “ Aris ‘ “ we do not need to put the letter “ s “ behind because the last letter of the word “ Aris “ is “ s “. Besides that apostrophe can be used for contraction ( for eg : she ‘s my mother, I’ll visit you tomorrow ). The words “ she ‘s “ is from “ she is “ and the word “ I’ll “ is from I will “.
Those are some common punctuation marks we like to use in English. For another punctuation marks will be explained next.
