Tips and Tricks to do TOEFL (Structure and written expression)

TOEFL stands for Test of English as a foreign language made by ETS found in 1963 in America for the purposes of continuing education for undergraduate or graduate, applying for work, applying for scholarships, or raising salaries

there are 3 skill tests in TOEFL
1. Listening comprehension 50 questions
2. structure and written expression 40 questions
3. Reading comprehension 50 questions

below will be discussed tips and tricks to work on the structure and written expression

General strategy

 

  1. Pray
  2. Understand the instructions before taking the test so there is not much time to waste on 3.
  3. Reading and understanding during the test
  4. When the narrator reads the direction start reading the answers
  5. Understand the difficulty level of the questions (1-10 = easiest, 41-50 = most difficult
  6. Management time is 25 minutes for 40 questions, so 1 question is estimated to be 66 seconds
  7. Understand Appositive, Parts of speech, Clause, Phrase, Gerund and sentence

 

Special strategy

  1. See the subject and verb / predicate (if you don’t have it you have to find it in the answer)

    2. Understand subject and verb agreement = conformity (if the subject is singular then so is verb or plural subject

    3. Specify tenses (description of time / when)

  2. If the subject sought is the answer related to the noun then the article and determiner need to be checked (a, an, the, any, all etc.), whether singular or plural, noun clause, gerund or to-infinitive
  3. If there is a blank space after the subject but a predicate exists then it is necessary to look for appositive or adjective clause / relative pronouns
  4. If the verb is sought then check the subject and the verb agreement and tenses
  5. If the subject and verb are complete then check the object or adverb
