Prohibition is an expression to warn or forbid others not to do something. There are two types of prohibition, namely verbal prohibition and nominal prohibition
- Verbal Prohibition
The sentences in this prohibition contain verbs.
- Pattern; Don’t + Verb 1
Examples;
- Miss Linda said, “Don’t cheat on the exam”.
- Don’t disturb your brother. He must finish his project.
- Don’t play outside. It’s going to rain.
- Don’t go anywhere, your parents will go home soon.
- Don’t do it. You will hurt yourself.
- Pattern; No + Verb-ing
Examples:
- No littering! You will make this park dirty.
- No swimming! There is a crocodile in this lake.
- No kidding! it’s urgent.
- No parking in this area
- No smoking in this room.
- Nominal Prohibition
The sentences in this prohibition contain adjective, noun or adverb.
- Pattern; Don’t + be + Adjective / Noun / Adverb
Examples;
- Don’t be shy. Make yourself at home.
- Don’t be rude. She is older than you.
- You will face exam next week, so don’t be lazy to study.
- Don’t be arrogant if you want to have many friends.
- Don’t be sad. We can solve the problem together.
