Hay everyone, in this opportunity I would like to share about one of strategy in teaching reading. As we know that in teaching reading related with comprehension, because comprehension is one of aspect in reading. Teaching reading sometimes easy and sometimes difficult. It’s deppend on the student’s characteristic. In this situation the writer would like to share about strategy in reading comprehension and we can call it PQRST (Preview, Question, Read, State, Test)

PQRST are helping student tobe more conscientious in reading and give better comprehension. For using this strategy, the students ask to think about what they have read, and make a question related the topic, and find the answer by reading the text with more conscientious.

The purpose of PQRST is to improve reading comprehension and foster students’ curiosity related to the topic to be read. However, in implementing this strategy, the text given should be a text that is rich in information so students can later find answers to the questions they have.

As the name suggests, this PQRST consists of 5 stages which can be explained as follows: PreviewAt this stage, students will be asked to observe or read in general and at a glance. Then, students are asked to associate with things they know and activate their prior knowledge, especially related to the topic. QuestionsAt this stage, students are asked to make questions about the topic being read. This question is a question that arises from their curiosity after reading in general. Keep in mind, reading text in general does not give us comprehensive information especially if the time allotted is very limited. These questions actually lead them to be able to read more carefully and find information they want to know. For example, the text given is narrative, so their questions might be:Who is / who are the major character / s?What do / does  the major character / s look like?Where did the story take place? ReadAfter making a question, then tell them to answer the question they made before by reading the text more thoroughly. The question is what will make them to read more thoroughly and can even repeatedly in order to understand the contents of the text and finally be able to answer the questions they have made before.

StateAt this stage students are asked to make a summary of the text they have read carefully before. Of course, this summary should be done using their own language by not copy and paste. TestAt this stage, students will be given questions related to the contents of the text. At this stage of the test, students will truly be tested whether they have understood the text that has been given or not. The explanation above is an explanation of the PQRST strategy. Hopefully this explanation is useful for all teachers, especially in reading lessons.
